Burden Basket

Before the Sioux came to rely upon hunting of buffalo for their food, they had been farmers in Minnesota.  They raised flint and flour corn using a burden basket to collect the ears of corn and other produce such as pumpkins and squash.

This basket is very heavy, being built with a thick wood framework, then woven with heavy buffalo rawhide.  Such a basket was carried by women on their backs with a strap over their shoulders to bear the load.
