Hair extensions were popular with the Arikara and Crow men. The hair piece shown to the right has a beaded brow band with concho shells at the ends. There are three rows of ermine secured with blue beads to keep the rows intact to avoid tangling. The hair consists of the owner's hair and buffalo braided together.

Plains Indians believed hair had power. Hair was added to many items such as lances, war clubs and war shirts. It was believed that long hair appeased the Thunder Being who might aid a warrior. Early artists picture warriors riding horseback with their long hair streaming behind them in the wind.
